LLEW: Leibniz Laboratory for Experimental Economic Research

Hero Image Hero Image Hero Image

The Leibniz Laboratory is equipped with 18 computer workstations separated by mobile, soundproof partitions. Economic and social science experiments are used to study human behaviour in relevant decision-making situations. Decision heuristics, risk attitudes, social preferences and learning behaviour are important fields of research in experimental behavioural science. Experiments enable the flexible analysis of a wide range of decisions while keeping external influences constant. This is often not possible, or only possible to a limited extent, with the empirical analysis of existing data.

Take part in experiments

Would you like to actively participate in research as a student and earn money at the same time? Then why not take part in an experiment at the Leibniz Laboratory for Experimental Economic Research (LLEW) as a test subject? No prior knowledge or special expertise is required. You will learn everything you need to know when you sit down at a computer in our laboratory. There, you will be presented with decision-making problems that you will solve either alone or together with other participants. The amount of money you will receive at the end depends on these decisions. The payouts are designed to make it worthwhile for you to be a test subject with us. Although the payouts vary from experiment to experiment, the aim is to achieve an average remuneration of around EUR 11 per hour across all experiments. So, join in! Help us with our research and combine an interesting experience in our laboratory with an improvement in your own financial situation.

Have we sparked your interest? Then click on the ‘Register’ button below. Registration is, of course, completely non-binding! The only requirement for participating in experiments is that you have native-level German language skills (at least level C1). After successful registration, we will invite you to participate in a research experiment after a short period of time. If you are interested and have the time, you can then make a binding registration for one of the available dates.

You can participate in our surveys without disclosing your personal data. If individual personal data such as age or gender is collected, it will be used exclusively for the scientific purpose of the survey. We never pass on individual data to external parties. If participation in competitions is possible at the end of individual surveys, the personal data required for this will be used exclusively for this purpose.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why are economic experiments conducted?

The experiments serve the purpose of economic research into behaviour in economic decision-making situations. Participants are confronted with specific decision-making situations at isolated computer workstations. The decisions made by the participants are recorded anonymously and evaluated statistically. These analyses serve as the basis for scientific articles and papers.

  • What is experimental economic research?

Experimental economics is an important empirical research method for studying human behaviour in economic decision-making situations, for example in research on game theory, investor behaviour on stock markets and tax perception. One of the pioneers of experimental economics, the American economist Vernon Smith, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002.

  • How long does an experiment take?

The duration varies greatly and is usually between 45 and 90 minutes. Normally, the approximate duration is communicated to the participant in the invitation. Payment is usually made in cash immediately after the experiment.

  • How much money can you earn by participating?

Your earnings vary from experiment to experiment and always depend on your own decisions and, to some extent, on the decisions of the other experiment participants.

  • Who can take part in the experiments?

No prior knowledge is required. However, you must speak German in order to fully understand the instructions for the experiment.

  • What happens after I register as a participant?

You will be added to the database of interested parties. As soon as an experiment takes place, potential participants will be randomly selected from the database and invited to take part. The invitation will inform you of the exact time and duration of the experiment. You can then accept or decline the invitation if, for example, the timing does not suit you.
